sutra 1.4

वृत्तिसारूप्यमितरत्र
vṛttisārūpyamitaratra

vr̥tti वृत्ति = vortex
sārūpyam सारूप्यमि – identity
itaratra तरत्र – otherwise

Otherwise, your identity is the vortexes.

You are a tiny particle of divine consciousness and it is through your individual consciousness that the loving awareness of the universe observes itself. But, there’s a paradox in this. For the creator to know its creation, divine consciousness has given you myriad ways to witness an ever-changing kaleidoscope of experiences.

This can be overwhelming and the residues of everything you’ve lived through can prevent you from knowing the peace, joy, and wisdom that is your true self. Your consciousness gets engulfed in churning whirlpools pulling you into your thoughts, emotions, and moods, until these stormy waters are who you think you are.

When you stop identifying with these vortexes, you inhabit your true nature, your inherent and eternal oneness with divine consciousness. Until then, like the mythological Greek sea monster Charybdis, you personify the whirlpools.

This isn’t about being unworthy. Even if your thoughts, emotions, and moods were all “perfect,” the limited vision of your ego identity would still be too narrow to see the whole. Nothing against your ego, but its perspective is too small to experience the ecstasy of being awake to the reality of Oneness moment by moment.
