sutra 1.16

तत्परंपुरुषख्यातेर्गुणवैतृष्ण्यम्

tatparaṁ puruṣa-khyāteḥ guṇa-vaitr̥ṣṇyam

tat = the

param = supreme

purusa = purusa, the seer

khyati = realization

guna = qualities (sattva, rajo and tamo)

vaitrsnyam = absence of desire

That highest state of purusha (the individual soul) is the khyati (realization) of guna-vaitrsnyam (freedom from the false notion of separateness that comes from classifying our experiences based on their various qualities).

The highest state of the individual soul is the realization that we can be free not only from cravings, but free from separateness itself. How can you crave anything when you are everything. How can you crave love when you are love?

Khyati isn’t an ordinary realization. The literal translation of Khyati is celebrity. Khyātī is a character from Hindu myth who became famous for having acquired the lustre of gold on a complexion the color of lightning. This realization of freedom from separateness is very special, sort of like what we say about an idea that’s like a lightbulb turning on, but with Khyati it’s an idea that’s so bright it makes us shine like a lightbulb.

You know you’re experiencing freedom from separateness when your understanding that you are one with the loving awareness of the universe makes you feel like you’re shining as bright as Khyati.
