Sutra 1.23

ईश्वरप्रणिधानाद्वा

īśvara-praṇidhānād-vā

When your desire for liberation is so great that you’re willing to drop your baggage to get on that train, what’s the train? What train takes us to liberation? Surrender to a higher power.

There are two ways to look at this. If you believe in God, it’s easy. Drop your baggage and get on the train means, Let go and let God.

In Hinduism, Īśvarapraṇidhāna (ईश्वरप्रणिधान) refers to “faith in and surrender to the gods”

But, for people who struggle with the concept of God, there’s a concept from Mahāyāna Buddhism, of Praṇidhāna (प्रणिधान) without the Īśvara. It’s the “Bodhisattva vow”. A bodhisattva is one who aspires to the complete, perfect enlightenment of themselves and all beings. Motivated by boundless compassion (karuṇā), and tempered by the perfection of wisdom (prajñā), the Bodhisattva generates bodhichitta, “the enlightened mind”, compassion itself.
