जातिदेशकालसमयानवच्छिन्नाः सार्वभौमा महाव्रतम्
Jātideśakālasamayānavacchinnāḥ sārvabhaumā mahāvratam
~
These are the great vows that everyone on Earth, no matter their birth, should aspire to in all places, times and circumstances.
Jāti, birth; deśa, place; kāla, time; samaya, circumstance; anavacchinnāḥ, unconditioned; sārva, every; bhaumāh, place on earth; mahāvratam, great vow
~
Yamas are considered the great vow. They are not exempted by one’s class, place, time or circumstance. They are universal.
~
Yamas are for everyone. According to Patanjali’s teachings all the (aspiring) yogis should try to follow these abstensions. Yamas are prerequisite and foundation for all the other yoga practices. Patanjali makes quite absolute statement right here. You can understand from this sutra that practice which is not supported by yamas and niyamas will not lead one to the meditative absorption (samadhi) and Kaivalya. Shree Radhe-Shyam!
